Best lunch spots around Upper Thomson Road

The Upper Thomson stretch is a café hound’s delight, but look beyond the snazzy coffee places and you’ll find beloved zi char restaurants and hawker centres the neighbourhood residents clamour over. Out hunting for lunch? Make it worth your while. Here are our top picks in the vicinity.

Pagi Sore Indonesian Restaurant
Located on the rooftop of Entrepreneur Centre, this particular branch maintains the excellent standard diners have come to expect of Pagi Sore with more perks: ample parking and less crowds. Must-try dishes include the Ayam Bali and Ikan Otak Kukus.
50 Tagore Lane Singapore 787494. $$$

Yahava Koffeeworks
Here’s the thing with Yahava: aside from toasties, cakes, pastries, and lasagnas, Yahava doesn’t really do food. The focus here is coffee: chat with their well-versed baristas and you’ll understand the obsession – these guys are knowledgeable, efficient, and always willing to share what they know. Samples are available before purchase.
4 Jalan Gelenggang, Singapore 578188. $$

La Piazzaiola
Portions run smaller here, but their wood-fired, stone oven made pizzas get a consistent two thumbs up from residents in the area.
19 Kalidasa Avenue Singapore 789398. $$$

Casuarina Curry
Diehard prata fans love Casuarina Curry for their light and crispy roti prata. Tip: skip the Maggie Goreng and order the plain prata, egg prata, and banana prata (which comes drizzled with caramel) if you have a sweet tooth.
136 Casuarina Road, Singapore 579524. $

Upper Thomson stretch
This is the reason café-goers flock to the area. A little farther down from Thomson Plaza you’ll find the famous Meng Kitchen Bak Chor Mee (246B Upper Thomson Rd). Pop by next door for ice-cream at Salted Caramel (246F), or if you’re dining with Muslim friends, hit up Badoque Café (246) where their extensive range of cuisines will spoil the party rotten. Fatboy’s (187) is where to get your burger fix, but if you’re rooting around for lunch with a side of Instagram, One Man Coffee (215R) and Pacamara Boutique Coffee Roasters (185) are better bets. Not a fan of Casuarina Curry? Try the deep-fried pratas at The Roti Prata House (246M) – best saved for a Friday treat.

Base Café
A 5 minutes drive away from SIX80, Base Café serves a Western menu of grilled lamb chops, pasta, big breakfast plates, and a highly unusual Black Charcoal Waffle.
#01-2661 Block 603 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5, Singapore 560603. $$-$$$

Sembawang Hills Food Centre
After the area bid farewell to Longhouse, Sembawang Hills Food Centre became the go-to spot for hawker fare. We recommend the Kway Chap (#01-06), and Satay Bee Hoon (#01-22).
590 Upper Thomson Rd, Singapore 574419. $
